A chair story

The word "chair" comes from the Latin word "cathedra" which means seat, bench, throne. Yet sitting in a chair has only been a common fact of our culture for a century and a half.

Maintaining your chairs

Finally, here are some tips to make your chairs last as long as possible. And even if you've invested in quality furniture, you need to put in place good practices to keep them in the first day's condition! 

1/ Use your chair as such!

Indeed, the chairs are made in such a way as to support the weight of a seated person. Therefore, they should not be used as a stepladder to reach the ceiling bulb or to deposit heavy loads.

2/ Slide them under the table

Make sure to choose a chair model that can be slid under the table, additional protection to hazards and dust. However, avoid sticking the back of the chair at the edge of the table, this could, by repetition, leave marks on the table or on the chair. So always leave a small space between them.

3/ Avoid cold hot

Natural materials (wood, leather, etc.) can be sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. It is best to avoid placing them too close to a heat source (radiators, chimney, etc.) as well as plastic chairs that could melt. 

4/ Watch out for lighting

And yes, the sun and its UV but also strong lighting like halogen lamps for example, have an impact on the surface of furniture. Depending on the material, your chair will brighten or darken. 

5/ We're shooting...

If you have more chairs than regular diners at your tables, consider regularly changing the chairs to avoid always sitting on the same ones. This will prevent you from marking the most used chairs and allowing the foam to keep its hardness. 

6/ Clean up  

And yes, no secret, to keep your chairs in good condition, think about cleaning them and dusting them regularly. There are special brushes for upholstery, so consider passing it at least once a week.

For the leather, a duster or a dry cloth will suffice. If you are trying your chair, deal with the task immediately. If the chair covering is removable, remove it and wash it as shown on the label. Many models can be machine-washed. Otherwise, you must first find out what the task is.

For a grease stain, for example, if it is still wet, sprinkle with talcum powder or flour. If it is dry, apply paper towels and pass a medium-hot iron over the whole. Renew the paper when it is dirty. Finally, dab the remaining traces with a highly diluted ammonia-soaked fabric.

For a wet wine stain sprinkle with cornflour, brush and dab with milk and finally clean with soapy water. If the task is dry, dab with white vinegar. 

7/ Armrests 

Don't forget to treat your armrests regularly with varnish or a layer of oil. Indeed, they are often in contact with the skin (sweat, creams, etc.) and are therefore a sensitive part of the chair. Besides, the armrest is a word used wrongly! And yes, the armrest would be the part of the chair located at the top of the back, on which one can lean with the elbows ... standing behind the chair. The parts where the forearms are resting and commonly referred to as armrests are in fact the armrests!
