Finding its source in the Arabic and Ottoman languages, the word pouffe refers to a cushion without backrest or armrests used in the Middle East and North Africa to sit comfortably on the ground during the meal, around a dish placed in the center of the guests. The term gradually generalized to mean any kind of low seat or cushion placed on the floor.

The story of the pouf

It comes from oriental decoration and was originally a luxurious object, reserved for kings. It arrives in Europe in the 19th century and looks very much like a low stool. Often adorned with cover fabrics and ruffles, it becomes very popular at the end of the century. Retrieved by designers, this small piece of furniture was declined in all forms during the 2 th century. Today it is a very fashionable element of deco and it is present in the majority of modern interiors.
