Choosing correctly the size and shape of your cushions

 

First element to keep in mind before choosing your cushions: the size of the couch or armchair on which they will be laying. Indeed, it is a matter of proportion: the biggest the couch is, the better it is to choose big enough cushions and in the same way for smaller couches for which small cushions will be more adapted.

 

Other way of choosing cushions’ size: adapt the size depending on the couch’s number of seats : for a three-seated couch, cushions of 50x50 size are considered as ideal.

 

It also accepted to vary sizes and thus you should not choose cushions of the same dimensions. Having them of different sizes enables to create a more natural effect, while cushions of the same size will bring a rigid aspect to your room. You can also vary shapes and colours for more dynamism by choosing rectangular and square shaped or unpaired coloured cushions. Feel free to leave place for your imagination and create a combination of shapes, colours and dimensions that corresponds you. You can for example assemble cushions made of different materials such as leather and textile.

 

Finally, do not hesitate to try various styles until finding the combination that fits you the best and with which you will feel the more at ease.

 

 

Go for mixed styles and materials

 

For a trendy living room, it is important to know how to combine different styles of cushions in order to avoid a monotonous atmosphere. Many ways of associating different styled cushions exist: it will help create dynamism.

 

In a first place, you can opt for a concrete solution: mix materials and textiles. You can use for example cushions made of leather associated with some made of textile, fur, wool etc. What is important is creating an original touch in order to make your couch’s and/ or your armchair’s decoration feel more warm.

 

In a second place, it is also possible to play with an association of colours: choosing cushions of different solid colours as to create this same effect. The ideal is to create an association of the same colour shade, for example, you can opt for three shades of blue that will create dynamism but will also bring a sober and simple aspect. Furthermore, to give more personality, you can add up to this solid colours association, one or two cushions with patterns but you should stay harmonious with your choice. You can opt for cushions with black and grey pattern, or for the last example, you could choose a pattern with a blue shade. 

 

It is also possible to choose a combination of cushions of a common theme but in different prints. Often, these cushions can be bought in a batch or can correspond to a particular designer’s style. This association is simple and will ensure a trendy touch without much effort.

 

However, if you wish to mix your cushion’s style, what you should know in order to create a harmonious association, is that, before you choose anything else, choose a key element around which you will create your combination. You can for example opt for a colour base that will pace other cushions. What is ideal is to choose one or two dominant colours, the other cushions should remind of these two. The key element can also be a pattern: for example, if you like the retro style, you can opt for a pattern such as dot patterns and choose all your cushions with this element, except for the colours that will vary (staying of course harmonious with your choice).

 

 

How many cushions should I lay on the couch?

 

In order to know how many cushions you should put on your couch, a simple and effective rule exists.  It is a question of placing an extra cushion regarding the number of seats. If your couch is a two-seated couch, you should position three big cushions. Indeed, the more the couch is important, the more you could multiply cushions. However, if you own a small couch, it is better to choose less cushions and preferably of small dimensions. It is better staying simple then risking overcharging it.

 

The overlaying of three cushions, particularly in a triangle shape is very trendy. Thus, a combination as a trio (3 or 6 cushions) is modern and will help create an atmosphere brought up to date.  For a combination of three cushions, you should notably choose a dominant cushion to which the other two will refer.

 

 

Colours and patterns associations depending on the rest of the room


Finally, what is important when choosing them, it is to create harmony but not only around the couch. Indeed, the cushions combination for which you will opt must be in line with the whole room. Thus, in order to choose correctly what type of association you should create, you will have to ask yourself the good questions.


- Is your room already filled with strong colours or significant patterns? If it the case, the adapted technique in order to combine your cushions is called the “tone-on-tone effect”. Indeed this technique consists of adapting them to tones already present in the room. Red coloured curtains? Choose a cushion in the same shade of colour, wine-coloured or dark-red for example. In the same way, if you own a blue-shaded painting, you should choose cushions in the same shade. Moreover, if you own a lampshade with a zebra printed pattern, you may opt for a cushion with the same pattern in addition to one black and one white cushion.

 

- If however, your room is plain and do not contain any vibrant colour, the ideal is to galvanize the whole room by bringing more colourful and fanciful cushions. It is the right time to opt for an original touch by choosing them round-shaped or with unusual patterns and materials! You may opt for fur, glitters, a leopard pattern, whatever suits your fancy in order to create some contrast! However, you should not forget the cushions combination rules evoked before.
