Sofas History
It would be in the Arab countries that appeared the sofa in the form of long wooden chairs decorated with cushions and fabrics.
The ancient Egyptians also had couch-like that looked like benches and were less comfortable than their Arabic and Persian counterparts.
Recovered by the Romans and Greeks, only upper class men were allowed to lie on the couches during meals.
In the Middle Ages it looked like a wooden bench covered with a mattress and it often served as a bed. It was a luxury product aimed at the upper classes.
In the eighteenth century, sofas began to appear with padding in the style of those we have today. The furniture has continued to evolve until the industrial revolution where mass production popularized it within the middle class.
Art Deco designers took it over and sofas are today a piece of furniture that exists in many varieties of styles!
Types of sofas
There are of course different types of sofas. Take the most common:
1 / The 2 seater sofa
It is between 116 and 199 cm wide with a seat height of 35 to 5 cm. like the VLADA 2 seater scandinavian sofa in fabric (light gray). This type of sofas is often convertible and allows to obtain an additional bed when unfolded.
You can also combine several 2-seater sofas as with the ALBERT 2-seater straight sofa (brown).
2 / The 3 seater sofa
It measures between 2 and 259 cm wide with a seat height similar to the 2-seater sofa. LUCIA 3 seater sofa in fabric.
3 / The corner sofa
With its L shape it saves space in large living rooms. The classic corner sofa offers 5 seats, but there are models for 3 or 4 people. MORIS sofa (dark gray)
4 / The sofa bed or convertible sofa
This type of sofa like the convertible sofa URSULA is perfect for studios or small apartment. It offers the possibility of having an extra bed. Very convenient for those who often receive guests and do not have a guest room!
How to choose a sofa?
Even if the blog gives you some more tips, here is an overview of things to do to choose your sofa.
The first thing to do is to ask the right questions: what uses I will make of my sofa, what surface I have, what type of sofa I prefer (corner sofa, a 2 seater model or a convertible sofa), do I prefer a firm or a softer seat, will i choose velvet, leather or cotton etc.
All these criteria depend on your tastes and preferences but also on your interior and your lifestyle.
If you have children or pets for example, prefer a suitable and resistant sofa! You will not even choose the same sofa if it supposed to be your cozy place to lie in front of the television or if you often eat there.
Likewise if you have a lot of visits think about convertible models. If you have a small living room, avoid corner sofas, they are bulky and can impede movements. Choose this type of sofa for large pieces. So you need to take accurate measurements of your space before buying your sofa so you do not have a bad surprise!
It is best to leave a space between the wall and the sofa, so when you take your measurements, consider leaving an extra margin.Once your back is touching the backrest, your feet should touch the ground for maximum comfort. Remember to look at the seat height.
Also do not forget to take into account the resilience of the foam (which is its ability to recover its shape). HR foams (high resilience) are recommended. Finally you have to choose the material of your sofa. Leather is a textile that ages well. It lasts a long time and is relatively simple to maintain, a wet sponge spent once a week will be enough to rid the sofa of its dust. For fabric (cotton, linen, velvet, etc.) choose natural materials that do not attract dust. Vacuum once a week. If you are sensitive to dust mites, wash once or twice a year with shampoo + water. As for synthetic materials, they are more resistant to stains, wash twice a year with Marseille soap or maintenance milk.
Take care to always choose cushions with removable covers to ensure good hygiene. Also watch out for the color of the sofa, the more it will be clear and the more messy it will be.
TV evening ...
The sofa is a central furniture of our interior, we spend a lot of time on or around. That's why it appears a lot in movies and series ...
Here is a small Top 5 of most famous sofas of our screens.
1 / The simpsons
Whether you're a follower of this animated series or not, it's unlikely that you've never heard of the Simpsons, or seen their famous brown sofa in the middle of their living room in the style of the 3 seater Sofa VLADA. Apparently a 5 places as the whole family in its place on it!
2 / Breakfast at Tiffany's
A reference a little older now with Breakfast at Tiffany's, a film released in 1961 that starred the beautiful Audrey Hepburn as a golddigger. The sofa of this one is not other than a half bath-tub filled with pastel cushions.
3 / Titanic
James Cameron's famous film would not be the same without the famous painting scene where Jack draws Rose lying naked on a couch. This Louis XV style sofa remains an emblematic element of the scene.
4 / The big bang theory
Another brown sofa, leather one, on which Sheldon and his friends spend a good part of the series. Whether it is to eat, to confide their problems or to launch impenetrable scientific debates, the sofa occupies a central part of this program!
5 / Friends
Still series but a little older this one, how to forget the big sofa in velvet in the series Friends, on which the characters have exchanged so many confidences, coffee and friendliness!
We could of course talk about Oprah's couch for her famous TV show or the Divan,a program broadcast on France 3, but the list would be too long. The sofa is indeed the furniture symbol of comfort and conviviality par excellence and therefore appears repeatedly in our series, our programs and our favorite movies!
